Fairy Garden blanket - Free crochet pattern

In June, I started playing with some leftover yarn I had in my stash and made some of these granny squares. After a few months, I decided to crochet a blanket for my goddaughter. However, as the baby's due date approached, I hadn't finished all the granny squares. So, I ended up giving her my Sofia blanket, which looks just as beautiful with a matching sweater and hat.

Later, in December, I picked up this project again with the idea of using only what I had at home. That meant I had to adjust my plans and colors as I went along. Earlier this year I decided to share the pattern for free here. So let's get started.

  • This pattern requires at least 4 colors to highlight the flower design but you can add as many as you want. For my Fairy garden blanket I used 6 main colors for the flowers, cream for the joining and border and a mix of leftovers for the rows 5 and 6 in the granny squares.
  • Estimated quantities required if you use 4 colors:
    • Flowers: 140 grams
    • Row 5 (leaves): 90 grams
    • Row 6: 125 grams
    • Joining and border: 115 grams
  • Colors I used:
    • Soft Peach / Fondant / Candyfloss/ Clematis / Magenta / Lilac
    • Duck Egg / Pistachio / Sage / Forest green
    • Camel / Parchment / Silver / Graphite / Green Bottle / Brownish Grey / Light Grey
    • Cream

Abbreviations -  US terms

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
tr cluster stitch: * Yarn over two times and insert the hook in the stitch. Pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through the first two loops. Yarn over and draw through the next two loops. You should now have two loops left on your hook. Yarn over again and draw through the loops one more time, now leave the stitch unfinished ** with one loop remaining in your hook. Repeat from * to ** 2 more times, you will end up with 3 loops in your hook, yarn over and draw through all the loops in your hook to finish the tr cluster.

Make a magic circle or ch 6 and slip stitch in the frst ch.

Row 1: ch 1 (does not count as stitch), sc x 16 into the ring. Join with slip stitch in the first sc. [16 sc]

Row 2: ch 1 (does not count as stitch), (dc, ch 1) x 16. Join with slip stitch in the first dc. [16 dc and ch 1 spaces]

Row 3: ch 1 (does not count as stitch), (sc in the next stitch, sc in the next ch 1 space) x 16. Join with slip stitch in the first sc. [32 sc]

Row 4: ch 1 (does not count as stitch), (sc in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch) x 8. Join with slip stitch in the first sc. Fasten off and cut the yarn. [8 petals] Change the color and start working in any sc from row 4.

Row 5: * tr cluster in the next sc, ch 3, tr custer in the same sc, ch 2, sc in the ch 1 from the previous row (go through the ch and not the space), ch 6, sc in the next ch 1, ch 2** Repeat from * to ** 4 times. Join with slip stitch in the first tr cluster, fasten off and cut the yarn. [8 leaves]

Change the color and start working from any ch 3 space.

Row 6: * 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the same ch 3 space, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 5 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next ch space, dc in the next stitch, ** Repeat from * to ** 4 times. Join with slip stitch in the first dc, fasten off and cut the yarn. [19 dc into each side including the stitches in the corners, 76 dc in total]

The next step is make as much granny aquares you need for your blanket size. For mine I made 49 granny squares. Take into consideration the joining adds 1 cm approximately to each granny square and the border adds 3 cm to each side of the blanket.

Then decide your layout to start joining your squares. The PDF pattern includes a coloring page of 7 x 7 squares if you find it helpful. Also you can play around with your granny squares once you have them all. I highly recommend you to weave in all the ends before joining but is up to you.

For the joining  as you go step-by-step guide click here, then come back for the border.

Border

(If you follow the instructions from join as you go post until the end adding the extra row, skip the row 1 in this post.)

Row 1: attach the yarn in the first stitch from any corner, ch 1, sc in the same stitch or ch 1 space, work ch 1, sc into each ch space. Don’t skip the ch spaces between the joining corners of the squares.

In the corners, work sc, ch 3, sc in the same corner.

In the last corner, work sc, ch 3, sc in the same corner, ch 1, slip stitch to join in the first sc.

Row 2: slip stitch in the next ch space, ch 1, sc in the same ch 1 space, work ch 1, sc into each ch space. In the corners, work, ch 1, sc in the same corner 3 times.

In the last corner, work sc, ch 3, sc in the same corner, work ch 1, sc in the ch 1 space from previous row until reach first sc of the row, ch 1, slip stitch to join.

Row 3: slip stitch in the next ch space, ch 1, sc in the same ch 1 space, * ch 5, skip 1 ch 1 space, sc into the next ch space ** Repeat from * to ** all the way around.

When you have one ch 1 space left, ch 3, dc in the first sc of the row.

Row 4: ch 1, sc in the same space, *(2 dc, ch 3, slip stitch in the front loop and one vertical loop from of the last dc) x 3, 2 dc in the next ch space, sc in the next ch space **

Repeat from * to ** until you have one ch space before the corner.

Corner: Work (2 dc, ch 3, slip stitch in the front loop and one vertical loop from of the last dc) x 4 in the last ch space of the side, then repeat from * to **.

Repeat from * to ** and the corner 3 more times. Join with slip stitch in the first sc.

Weave in all the ends. You can block your blanket or simply hand wash and lay flat to dry for better results.
